Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold Reveals Its Future. The New Expansion Brings a New Story, New Jobs, and Major Gameplay Changes

FF XIV Evercold

Square Enix officially unveiled Evercold, the sixth major expansion for Final Fantasy XIV Online, during Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026. The expansion marks the beginning of an entirely new storyline called the Godless Realms Saga, introducing new regions, jobs, raids, gameplay systems, and a wealth of content that aims to shape the next chapter of one of the world's most successful MMORPGs. Evercold is currently scheduled to launch in January 2027.

A Brand-New Story Begins

Following the conclusion of the previous storyline, players will embark on a completely new adventure. Evercold opens the Godless Realms Saga, taking the Warrior of Light to an unexplored world known as The Fourth. While Square Enix has remained secretive about the story itself, the reveal trailer showcases breathtaking frozen landscapes, mysterious civilizations, and powerful new threats waiting to be uncovered. According to the developers, Evercold is intended to serve as the foundation for the game's next long-term narrative arc.

Two New Jobs Join the Roster

The expansion will introduce two brand-new jobs:

  • A new Tank
  • A new Physical Ranged DPS

The first officially revealed job is Bastion, a heavily armored defender wielding a pair of enormous shields known as skyltborg. Bastion specializes in protecting allies, controlling the battlefield, and absorbing tremendous amounts of damage. The second new job has yet to be announced.

Level Cap Increased to 110

As expected from a major expansion, the maximum player level will increase from 100 to 110. Players can look forward to new abilities, expanded job rotations, additional progression systems, and more opportunities to customize their favorite classes.

Greater Freedom Throughout the Main Story

One of Evercold's biggest gameplay innovations is a more flexible approach to story progression. Rather than following a strictly linear path, players will have greater freedom to choose which regions and objectives they want to complete first.

Thanks to the new Auto Content Balancing system, enemy difficulty and dungeon scaling will automatically adjust to the player's progression, allowing for a more open adventure.

New Regions, Dungeons, Trials, and Raids

Evercold will significantly expand the game's PvE offering with:

  • Brand-new cities
  • Vast new regions
  • Additional dungeons
  • New Trial encounters
  • A completely new Raid series
  • A new Ultimate Raid

Square Enix has also confirmed that regular post-launch patches will continue introducing additional content, gear, crafting recipes, and gameplay improvements throughout the expansion's lifecycle.

Expanded character customization

Character creation and customization are receiving a substantial upgrade. Players will gain access to:

  • A full color picker instead of fixed color presets
  • More detailed facial customization
  • Additional makeup options
  • New cosmetic features

Evercold will also introduce Character Action Skins, allowing players to customize animations for selected abilities such as Teleport, with more actions planned in future updates.

Final Fantasy VII and Evangelion Crossovers

Square Enix is preparing several exciting crossover events alongside Evercold.

One of the biggest additions will be a brand-new Raid series inspired by the Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy. In addition, players can look forward to a new Evangelion Alliance Raid collaboration, continuing the studio's tradition of memorable crossover content.

Nintendo Switch 2 Version Confirmed

Another major announcement is the arrival of Final Fantasy XIV on Nintendo Switch 2. The game launches on the platform on August 4, 2026, with the Free Trial, Starter Edition, Complete Edition, and Dawntrail becoming available on the new console.

The Community Is Growing Again

Interest in Final Fantasy XIV appears to be rising once more. Recent community estimates suggest the game has surpassed one million active players for the first time in over a year, fueled by growing excitement surrounding the Evercold expansion. While these figures are based on publicly available player data rather than official numbers, they indicate a healthy resurgence for the MMORPG ahead of its next major chapter.
